This section also includes Washington, DC, which does not fall within one of the 50 U.S. states. In 1791 President George Washington chose the area that would become the nation's capital and be known as the District of Columbia. Located between Maryland, Virginia, and the Potomac River, the district was named after Christopher Columbus. In 1800, John Adams became the first U.S. president to live in the White House. Washington, DC has a population of slightly more than 550,000 where 60 percent of residents are African American. The median home value in 2000 was $157,200.
