Alabama

Alabama became the nation’s 22nd state December 14, 1819. The state played a major role in the Civil War; its capital, Montgomery, was also the capital of the Confederate States of America. The Confederate flag was designed and first flown in Alabama (1861).

Alabamians enjoy pleasant warm weather and affordable real estate. The average daily highs in the state are in the mid-fifties during January, and reach up to 90 during July. Homes in Alabama during 2004 sold for, on average, a mere $147,000.
