History of Mesa, Arizona
Mesa is a city in Maricopa County, Arizona and part of the Phoenix-Mesa-Scottsdale, Arizona Metropolitan Area. It is the third-largest city in Arizona, after Phoenix and Tucson.
Mesa is one of the United States' fastest-growing cities, and currently ranks as the List of United States cities by population|41st-largest. In 2005 the mid-decade Census survey estimated the city's population to be 442,780. It actually has a larger population than better-known central cities of large United States metropolitan areas such as St. Louis, Missouri|St. Louis, Miami, Florida|Miami, and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania|Pittsburgh. It is the second most populous suburb|suburban city in North America, after Mississauga, Ontario.
Despite its large population, Mesa is decidedly a bedroom community. Large parts of the city are inflicted with minor urban blight. Mesa also contains several mobile home parks. Certain neighborhoods in Mesa consist of upper-middle class custom homes.
Mesa was founded in January 1878 by Mormon (The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints|Latter-day Saint or LDS) pioneers and its population is still roughly one-tenth Mormon. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints operates one of its oldest temples in Mesa (the Mesa Arizona Temple), and the city is a hub of sorts for Latter-day Saints residing in the Phoenix Metro area.
