Colorado

Colorado was named by the Spanish, who composed the name of two Spanish words: "color" (color), and "rojo" (red). And the state comes by its name honestly; Colorado's ubiquitous red sandstone makes it one of the most beautiful places in the nation, and the state is still nicknamed "Colorful Colorado" by many.

Colorado is the outdoorsman's paradise, with its numerous mountains (including Pikes Peak, the second most visited mountain in the world), national parks, and four distinct seasons (July highs reach the mid-eighties, while January lows drop below ten degrees), which make a variety of outdoor sports possible, including skiing and snowboarding during winter, and hiking and backpacking during summer. Because of these recreational advantages, Colorado was offered a chance to host the Olympics in 1976, but refused the offer, becoming the only state ever to do so.
