Illinois

Illinois became the 21st state in the nation December 3, 1818. Later, it became noteworthy as the first state to ratify the amendment abolishing slavery, the site of the world's first skyscraper, the site of the first McDonald's, and the home of Ronald Reagan, Walt Disney, Cindy Crawford, and Ray Bradbury.

Today, Illinois is home to the Sears Tower (the tallest building in North America), and the world's largest public library. This remarkable state is the location of choice for 12,700,000 residents. It boasts a strong economy, with average household income and per capita income both higher than the national averages.

The average home in the state sold for $219,000 during 2004, but prices are significantly higher in the Chicago area.
