Indiana
Indiana, also known as the Hoosier State, joined the United States in 1816, as the 19th state. It quickly became a major sporting state, as the site of the first pro baseball game and the first long distance auto race. It continues that tradition today with the annual Indianapolis 500.
The state is home to a fairly stable community, with less crime than the national average, and lower housing costs. The average Indiana home sale price in 2004 was $143,000, which may account for the fact that most Hoosiers are homeowners-approximately three times as many of the state's residents own than rent.
