Maine

Residents of this New England state are technically termed Mainers, although they have been called "Mainiacs" by some. Maine became the 23rd state during 1820, and is today the nation's leading producer of blueberries, toothpicks, and lobsters, along with the home of the 800,000 acre White Mountain National Forest. Maine also offers its residents an exceptionally low crime rate; on an index where 100 represents the national average Maine's crime score is a low 66.

Maine's northern location ensures that the state is quite cool for most of the year, getting up only as high as 78 degrees during summer and dropping as low as 6 degrees during winter. Residents are able to enjoy snowshoeing and sledding all winter long.

Maine, like the rest of the nation, is growing and home value is appreciating. Currently, homes in Maine are quite affordable and can be purchased as cheaply as $50,000, although the average home is priced nearer $100,000.
