Maryland

Maryland, the "Old Line State," became the 7th state in the Union on April 28, 1788. Home to about five-and-a-half million residents, famous Marylanders in the past have included Babe Ruth, Harriet Tubman, Frederick Douglass, and infamous John Wilkes Booth.

Maryland opened the first school in the United States in 1696, King Williams School. Maryland is the site of several other "firsts," including the first railroad station, the first dental school, and the first planned city in the United States (Greenbelt).

Maryland's climate consists of four distinct seasons, with the temperature climbing to nearly 90 degrees during the summer and falling as low as the 20s during winter.

An average Maryland home cost $246,000 during 2004.
