History of Worcester, Massachusetts

Worcester (IPA chart for English|pronounced {{IPA|/ˈwʊstər/}}) is a city in the U.S. state|state of Massachusetts in the United States|United States of America. A 2005 estimate put the population at 175,898, making it the third-largest city in New England, after Boston, Massachusetts|Boston and Providence, Rhode Island. It is also the second-largest city in Massachusetts, and the county seat of Worcester County, Massachusetts|Worcester County. The city marks the western periphery of the Boston-Worcester-Manchester (MA-RI-NH) Combined Statistical Area (CSA). Citizens of Worcester are called "Worcesterites". Being located in central Massachusetts, Worcester is referred to as the "Heart of the Commonwealth."
