Minnesota got its name from the Dakota Sioux Indian word for "sky-tinted water." This term affectionately refers to the Minnesota River as well as the many lakes that are within Minnesota's borders. Minnesota has been nicknamed the "North Star State," the "Land of 10,000 Lakes," and the "Gopher State." It became the 32nd state to join the Union on May 11, 1858.
