Mississippi

Mississippi was part of the Confederacy during the Civil War, and played a major role in the war. It suffered the highest percentage of deaths of any Confederate state, and Vicksburg is the site of the nation's second largest cemetery. Despite the heavy toll the war took on the state, Mississippi 's Friendship Cemetery is famous as the place where the women of Mississippi decided to put flowers on the graves of both Union and Confederate soldiers.

Mississippi is growing quickly compared to most other southern states, especially in the Jackson area, where the population has increased 46% since 1990. Real estate is therefore in demand, but remains affordable. Currently the average home in the state costs slightly less than $100,000.
