Nevada

Nevada became a state October 31 (Halloween), 1864. Residents today nickname the state either "Sin City," or the "Entertainment Capital of the World," depending on their point of view.

Not surprisingly, Nevada was where the slot machine was invented (1899). The invention was an instant hit; by 1960 Nevada had 16,067 slots, and by 1999 the number rose to 205,726, which equals one slot for every ten residents.

Nevada, ironically, takes its name from a Spanish word meaning snow-clad. While it is true that the state has more mountain ranges than any other state, much of Nevada is so hot it never sees a flake of snow (in Las Vegas, the average high during the summer is over 100 degrees).

The average home in Nevada sold for $229,000 during 2004, but this number is increasing rapidly as Nevada is one of the fastest-growing states in the nation. Real estate prices are going up especially fast in the Las Vegas-Henderson area.
