History of Winnemucca, Nevada

Winnemucca is the county seat of Humboldt County, Nevada|Humboldt County in the U.S. state of Nevada and the site of a September 19, 1900 bank robbery by the Wild Bunch. As of the United States 2000 Census|2000 census, the city had a total population of 7,174. Interstate 80 passes through the city, and is the site of a split/join of I-80 and U.S. Highway 95.

The town is also the setting of Johnny Cash's cover of I've Been Everywhere|"I've Been Everywhere". It is featured prominently in the novel Revoltingly Young (2006) by C.D. Payne. It is also a setting in More Tales of the City by Armistead Maupin, where one character finds employment as a receptionist in a local brothel.

According to a billboard spotted along Nevada State Route 140|Nevada State Highway 140 (the "Winnemucca To the Sea Highway"), Winnemucca styles itself "The City of Paved Streets" (the song referenced above talks about the hitchhiker walking along "the dusty Winnemucca road").
