History of Los Alamos, New Mexico
Los Alamos (Spanish: Los Ãlamos) is an unincorporated area|unincorporated townsite in Los Alamos County, New Mexico. The population was 11,909 at the 2000 census. It is home to the Los Alamos National Laboratory, which was founded to undertake the Manhattan Project. Los Alamos County is an municipal corporation|incorporated county, and many county offices are located at the townsite of Los Alamos. Los Alamos High School is the public high school of Los Alamos County. Before the Manhattan Project, the site was occupied by the Los Alamos Ranch School. Los Alamos is one of very few in the country to not have a mayor or city council. Los Alamos has a county council which the people elect. Then they elect between themselves a chairman and vice-chairman. The current chairman is James West (Republican (United States)|R) and the current vice-chairman is Michael Wheeler (Democrat (United States)|D).
