New York

The "Empire State" of New York, home to the "Big Apple," became the 11th state in the Union on July 26, 1788, and was actually the first capital of the United States. George Washington was sworn in as President in New York in 1788. The state currently has the third largest population in the nation with over 19 million residents.

New York has long been famous for its arts and cultural attractions. But the state offers plenty for the active to do outdoors as well. The Catskill Mountains, site of the legend of Rip Van Winkle, provide excellent hiking, walking, and fishing. Additionally, New York contains over 70,000 miles of rivers and streams, which support various plants and wildlife.

During 2004, the average New York home sold for about $300,000, but buyers looking to move near the New York City area can expect to pay more for smaller homes, since the area is in such high demand.
