History of Troy, New York

Troy is a city in New York, USA and is the county seat of Rensselaer County, New York|Rensselaer County. As of the United States Census 2000|2000 census, the city population was 49,170; in 1910, the population was 76,813. The city is named after the Troy|legendary city of Troy. The motto of the city is "Ilium fuit, Troja est", meaning "Troy was, Troy is."

The City of Troy is located on the western edge of the county and on the eastern banks of the Hudson River. Troy is home to Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Russell Sage College, Hudson Valley Community College and the Emma Willard School, and was the hometown of Uncle Sam.
