North Carolina
North Carolina became the 12th of the original 13 colonies on November 21, 1789, and as a state, has had an auspicious career. It was home to the first English colony in America, the Lost Roanoke Colony. It is also the birthplace of such notables as Dolley Madison, James K. Polk, and Andrew Jackson. North Carolina has hosted a variety of landmark national events, including the first successful flight of the Wright Brothers, and Babe Ruth's first home run.
More recently, North Carolina is noteworthy as the home of the Furniture Capital of the world (in High Point), the state where Pepsi was invented, and the place where Krispy Kreme Doughnuts was founded.
Today, North Carolina has even more to recommend it than just good furniture and doughnuts. The weather is warm and relatively temperate, with the average January high at 50 degrees and the average July high at 89. Some of the most beautiful beaches in the nation may be found in North Carolina as well.
