Blowing Rock, NC gets its name from the rock formation that rises 1,500 feet above the Saint Johns River gorge. The Blowing Rock area was fought over by the Cherokee and Catawba tribes. It is said that there were two lovers, one from each tribe, that were walking near the rocks when the man was recalled to his village to prepare for battle. The woman pleaded with him to stay with her. The decision tormented the man who threw himself off the blowing rock and into the gorge. The woman prayed to the Great Spirit to return her lover and as a reply, a great gust of wind blew her lover back up the cliff, landing him safely on the blowing rock.
