Goldsboro is a city in Wayne County, North Carolina|Wayne County, North Carolina, United States. It ranked last among the metro areas surveyed in the 2007 edition of Places Rated Almanac. The population was 39,043 at the 2000 census. It is the principal city of and is included in the Goldsboro, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. Founded in 1787, incorporated in 1847, it is the List of North Carolina county seats|county seat of Wayne County, North Carolina|Wayne County{{GR|6}}. The city is situated in the North Carolina's Coastal Plain and is bordered on the south by the Neuse River and the west by the Little River, about 35 miles southwest of Greenville, North Carolina|GreenvilleGeographic references|6 and 90 km (55mi) southeast of Raleigh, North Carolina|Raleigh, the state capital. Goldsboro is best known as home to Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.
