Oklahoma
Oklahoma became the 46th state in 1907. Nicknamed the "Sooner State" after eager homesteaders who tried to beat the rush, Oklahoma is home to 3.5 million residents and continues to grow, although perhaps more slowly than during the initial "rush." And it's not hard to see why; Oklahoma offers residents many points of interest, warm weather, and a low cost of living.
The Sooner State contains four mountain ranges and a 140 acre archaeological park, in addition to more man-made lakes than any other state. It is the site of the movie "Twister," and of the first successful tornado prediction. Oklahoma enjoys sunny summers with average daily highs in the 90s, and comparatively warm winters with average daily highs in the low 50s.
Oklahoma residents appreciate the low sales tax rate of 4.5%, along with the inexpensive housing. The average home sale price during 2004 was $132,000, although homes cost about twice as much near Oklahoma City.
