History of Allentown, Pennsylvania
Allentown is a city located in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania|Lehigh County, Pennsylvania, in the United States. After Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania|Pittsburgh, it is Pennsylvania's third most populous city. As of the United States Census, 2000| 2000 census, the city had a total population of 106,632. It is the county seat of Lehigh County.
Located on the Lehigh River, Allentown is the largest of three adjacent cities that comprise a region of eastern Pennsylvania known as the Lehigh Valley, with the cities of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania|Bethlehem and Easton, Pennsylvania|Easton nearby. Allentown is 60 miles (95 km) north of Philadelphia, the fifth largest city in the United States, and 90 miles (145 km) west of New York City, the largest city.
Dorney Park & Wildwater Kingdom|Dorney Park and Wildwater Kingdom, a highly popular amusement park, is located near Allentown. In addition, two four-year colleges, Cedar Crest College and Muhlenberg College, are located in Allentown.
