South Carolina
South Carolina's name comes from the Latin for Charles "Carolus," in honor of King Charles 1 of England. It became the 8th state in the Union on May 23, 1788. It is the home of Fort Sumter, site of the first battle of the Civil War, and boasts the longest waterfall in the eastern U.S.; the Upper Whitewater Falls descends for nearly 411 feet.
Nicknamed the "Palmetto State" because of the prevalence of its state tree, the Sabal Palmetto, South Carolina is a beautiful seaside state with a warm Atlantic climate. Average January high is in the mid-fifties, and the average July high is 90 degrees.
The 2004 average home selling price in South Carolina was $217,000.
