History of Sumter, South Carolina
Sumter (International Phonetic Alphabet|IPA: {{IPA|/ˈsʌmp.tə/}} or {{IPA|/ˈsʌmp.tɚ/}}) is a city in and the county seat of Sumter County, South Carolina|Sumter County{{GR|6}}, South Carolina, United States. Its population was 44,013 at the United States Census 2005|2000 U.S. Census. It is the principal city of the Sumter, South Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area.
It should not be confused with Fort Sumter, which is in Charleston, South Carolina|Charleston harbor, almost 100 miles away.
