Texas
Texas joined the United States as the 28th state December 29, 1845. Previously, it had been an independent entity known as the Lone Star Republic (1836-1845), and is today known as the Lone Star State. Texas is the only state to enter the United States by treaty rather than territorial annexation.
Texas is the largest state in land area in the Continental United States, and contains 7.4% of the nation's total land area. It is also the second largest state in population, with 22 and a half million residents.
