History of Draper, Utah
Draper is a city in Salt Lake County, and Utah County, located about 20 miles south of Salt Lake City, along the Wasatch Front. Between 1990 and 2000 Draper was Utah's fastest-growing city over 5,000 people (as of 2000). Its population in 1990 was 7,143 and had grown to 25,220 by the 2000 census. In 2005, Draper's population was estimated at 35,119. It is now one of the most exclusive places to live in the Salt Lake Valley.
Draper is home to the internet auction site Ebay's main customer service center. PGP Corporation, one of the largest computer encryption companies in the world also has there tech call center here. It is also home to the call center of Musicians Friend. The headquarters for 1-800 Contacts is also located in Draper.
The Utah State Prison is located in Draper, near Point of the Mountain. The execution of Gary Gilmore took place here on January 24, 1977.
There is a street named "Wayne's World Drive," after the title of the 1991 Mike Myers film; Wayne's World. This is one's person's theory.
Draper is also home to Utah's first Ikea, due to open in Spring 2007. It is also the home of professional golfer Mike Weir and the winds on Traverse Ridge make it one of the world's best hang-gliding spots.
In 2004, the Citizens of Draper City voted in favor of a tax increase to pay for the purchase of key pieces of property in the Corner Canyon area. The need for this purchase was to protect and preserve the Corner Canyon area for future enjoyment of the citizens of the City and the Salt Lake Valley area. In the fall of 2005, key properties were identified and purchased for the development of a regional park. The result was the purchase of 1,021 acres of property to be created in the the Corner Canyon Regional Park which will consist of parks, trails and other recreation areas.
In August 2006, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints broke ground for a temple in the fast growing community.
