Virginia
Virginia is a state rich in history. It became the 10th colony in 1788, but Jamestown, Virginia, was the first English settlement in the U.S. For this reason Virginia is known as the "Birthplace of a Nation," although the state has several other nicknames, including "Old Dominion," and "The State for Lovers." 8 presidents were born in Virginia, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson.
Virginia played a major role in the Civil War. Not only was it the site of the Confederate's capital (present state capital Richmond), but over half the Civil War battles were fought in Virginia. Today the state is home to many Civil War memorial sites and graveyards.
Virginia today has a population of about 7.5 million, and is growing rapidly. In many ways, it is an ideal state in which to live; residents enjoy a household income above the national average (Virginia's average is $66,000, the nation's is $60,000), lower air pollution than the national average, lower crime than the national average, and a very low sales tax rate of 3.5%.
