History of Martinsburg, West Virginia

Martinsburg is a city in Berkeley County, West Virginia|Berkeley County, West Virginia, USA. As of the 2000 census, the city population 14,972 (the Core based statistical area|CBSA, however, had a population of was 43,441) [http://www.downloadzipcode.com/WV/25401/]. It is the county seat of Berkeley County, West Virginia|Berkeley County{{GR|6}}. Martinsburg was founded in 1778 by General Adam Stephen who named it in honor of Colonel Thomas Bryan Martin, a nephew of Thomas Fairfax, 6th Lord Fairfax of Cameron. It was incorporated by an act of the West Virginia Legislature March 30, 1868. It is also home to the 167th Airlift Wing of the West Virginia Air National Guard|West Virginia Air National Guard.
